Official Star Trek Wines are Coming September 2019

Ahead of the 2020 Star Trek: Picard launch, Star Trek is launching a new line of wines. Star Trek is usually associated with space exploration, but Star Trek: Picard follows Captain Jean-Luc Picard into his retirement on his family vineyard. So, while fans watch Picard on his winery, they can also now enjoy a glass of Picard wine.

Star Trek partnered with Wines that Rock and Bordeaux-based Chateau Picard to craft the wines. Chateau Picard has existed for seven generations, since 1892, in the Saint Estèphe subregion of Medoc, Bordeaux. Its wines are known amongst Trekkies due to their name, but Chateau Picard has never been affiliated with Star Trek until now.

At launch, the wines include a Saint-Estèphe AOC 2016 Chateau Picard Cru Bourgeois ($60) and a United Federation of Planets – V2 Special Reserve 2017 Old Vine Sonoma Zinfandel ($50).

The Chateau Picard Cru Bourgeois is a Bordeaux blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. Tasting notes include dark fruit, “bold, sweet tannins”, and a juicy, spicy finish. Chateau Picard is known for its claret-style wines, and the 2016 Chateau Picard Bordeaux is similarly bright and fresh.

The United Federation of Planets wine is inspired by the stately gatherings held by Federation dignitaries. It is a blend of 87% Zinfandel, 12% Petit Sirah and 1% Syrah. Tasting notes include “concentrated strawberry, blackberry and plum preserves”, along with spice and slightly chewier tannins.

Chateau Picard Cru Bourgeois and United Federation of Planets wine are listed as the first two Star Trek wines in a collection of special vintages. So, fans can certainly hope for additional Star Trek wine releases to come. To learn more or buy a bottle, visit StarTrekWines.com. As the site notes, the wines will not ship until September 2019 “due to extreme temperatures on planet Earth.” Fans can also follow Star Trek Wines on Instagram.
