The list is updated every month, and focuses on quality, everyday-drinking wines for a low price.

To assess the selections, we turned to a source that’s less biased than our own palates — millions of drinkers on Vivino.com. Every wine on this list earned 4 out of 5 stars or higher on Vivino. For the purposes of this article, our goal is share out wines you may not have heard of before. So, major bulk wines such as Yellowtail, Sutter Home, or Barefoot have been excluded.

A biodynamic, estate-grown wine for under $20? Matetic Vineyards is a hidden gem. This boutique vineyard situated in Chile’s Rosario Valley. Its vineyards enjoy cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean, and excellent drainage from the granite soil. Drinkers enjoyed the Winemaker’s Blend’s rich, dark fruit with notes of chocolate and spice, backed by smooth, full-bodied tannins. The red blend contains Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Malbec.

2020 Vietti Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne
Asti, Piedmont, Italy – $19.99

Bodegas Juan Gil is a family-owned vineyard passed down through generations since 1916. The Monastrell grape, more commonly known as Mourvedre, thrives in Jumilla’s harsh climate of extreme temperatures. This results in wine with an intensity of flavor and concentration that drinkers love. The wine offers rich dark berry fruit and peppery spices, balanced out by bold acidity and fine-grained tannins for a lasting finish.

Masseria Surani Primitivo di Manduria
Primitivo di Manduria, Italy

Primitivo is technically the Zinfandel grape, made in Italy. And since Primitivo di Manduria, Puglia is one of Italy’s warmest wine regions, it yields wines that are rich and lush in flavor. Drinkers enjoyed its leathery blackberry, plum, and cherry flavors, oak and vanilla aromatics, and smooth tannins. Caveat: The wine labels in this store photo don’t match what I see online, but all other characteristics seem to be similar. This is a certified organic, estate-grown wine.

2021 Banshee Wines Cabernet Sauvignon

NOTE: this wine is mislabeled. Banshee Wines is based out of Sonoma and only makes Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. Amazon.com incorrectly states that the wine is sourced from “Paso Robles”. Drinkers loved its luscious flavors of blackberry, black cherry, black plum, and chocolate, layered in with vanilla, tobacco, and black pepper. This rich fruit is balanced by smooth, fine-grained tannins, cool-climate acidity, and a dry finish. 92 pts Wine Enthusiast.

It’s hard to find complexity and depth of flavor in value wines. Smith & Hook wins major favor amongst drinkers for its rich, layered notes of black cherry, currant, oak spice, leather, and chocolate. Smith & Hook is owned by Nick and Gaby Hahn, owners of the acclaimed Hahn Family Wines.
