Wine Review: Ravines Dry Riesling 2017 Offers Excellent Value

Watch out, German Riesling: there’s a new kid in town. New York’s Finger Lakes region is now producing crisp, dry, mineral-driven Rieslings that easily rival those of the Old World. At the forefront of this movement: the family-owned Ravines Wine Cellars. Owner and winemaker Morten Hallgren is pioneering Old World winemaking techniques in the New World.

Hallgren grew up on a winery in France’s Cote d’Provence. After receiving his oenology degree, he started making wine at the acclaimed Chateau Cos d’Estournel. However, since Hallgren’s wife and cofounder, Lisa, is from Texas, they decided to build their winery — and family — in America.

Today, the sloped, limestone-shale soils of Argetsinger Vineyard give a distinguishing minerality to Ravines Wines. If you like German Kabinett-style Riesling, I highly encourage you to consider Ravines Wine Cellars. We were blown away by the beautiful fruit and zesty minerality in their 2017 Dry Riesling. At just $18 per bottle, the region offers excellent value.
