It isn’t often that celebrities give us a glimpse into some of the most intimate moments of their everyday lives, unscripted and unedited. Which is why we’re so drawn to NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony’s new Youtube Live series, “What’s In Your Glass”. In this livestream series, Anthony invites us into his home and into intimate conversations with celebrity guests, to talk all things from quarantine to the wines in their glasses.
Most notably, in Anthony’s latest episode, he revealed to guest Jamie Foxx that he was working to launch his own wine label. While details are not yet available, Anthony said his goal was to make this wine available to friends and family by December 2020, in time for the holidays.
“It took me awhile to get to this point because I didn’t want to mess it up,” said Anthony to Foxx. For Anthony, starting a wine was about “learning the whole business, as opposed to just putting my name or stamping a logo on a bottle.”
Anthony revealed that his interest in wine first began ten years ago, while he lived in New York City. Back then, he felt wine there was a strong perception that wine was considered to be something done by “old” people. Anthony wanted to change that stereotype. He started to read through wine books and watch documentaries in an effort to build his knowledge in the space.
Today, Anthony’s wine span a diverse range of varietals and regions — although they do appear to skew red. In Anthony’s first episode, he enjoys a glass of 1999 Henri Bonneau Chateauneuf-du-Pape, noting the excellent value currently found in the region. In the conversation with Foxx, Anthony is sipping a 2008 Vérité Le Desire. This is a Cabernet Franc-based Bordeaux Blend from Sonoma County; current vintages retail at or above $300. And on his Instagram feed, he shares that one of his favorite wineries to visit is Domaine Serene. Anthony shows a clear interest for supporting boutique, artisan producers in his wine consumption.
“What’s In Your Glass” has had three episodes to date, featuring a diverse and thoughtfully curated cast of guests. The first episode was heavily wine-focused, sitting down with wine and media mogul Gary Vaynerchuk, while the second episode was a more familiar conversation with fellow NBA player Jimmy Butler.
Our favorite episode by far is the third livestream with Jamie Foxx. It plays to our innate curiosity about what celebrities are like behind the scenes, and the burning question: what wines do they drink? In their conversation, Anthony quizzes Foxx on his wine preferences. Not surprisingly, like many well-heeled celebs, Foxx reveals that he prefers red wine. However, he doesn’t specifically obsess over Napa Valley Cabernets or vintage Bordeaux. In fact, in a rapidfire Q&A with Anthony, he shares his preference for light-bodied wines to full bodied wines, and sweet wines over dry wines.
In the livestream, Foxx is drinking a glass of Far Niente Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. The bottle was given to him by someone special whom he had recently worked with on an “unprecedented” business endeavor.
Whatever Carmelo Anthony’s new wine might be, we expect it to be of high quality, and not just another celebrity wine. We’ll be sure to provide updates on Anthony’s new wine when it is released.
