Target Launches its Own Five Buck Chuck Wine

Just in time for Labor Day, over a thousand Target stores nationwide will carry a new addition: California Roots wines. California Roots is created by Target to elevate everyday occasions. The story is simple: five varietals, just five bucks each.

California Roots is available in Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Moscato, and a Red Blend. Each varietal is designed to pair with approachable, simple ingredients. For example, the Red Blend is recommended for wild mushroom pasta and grilled vegetables, while the Chardonnay is suggested to pair with artisanal cheeses and freshly baked bread.

One mystery remains. We all know Target doesn’t really own acres of vineyards, or have its own vintner. So where exactly is this Californian wine coming from? Who’s making it? Interestingly, a trademark was filed for California Roots in March 2017 by Sutter Home Winery. So potentially, California Roots might just be Sutter Home, under a different label. Not publicly confirmed, but it certainly would make sense that none other than Sutter Home would have enough volume to supply thousands of Target stores nationwide.

Wine, beer, and adult beverages is one of the fastest growing categories for Target, and they even committed to rolling out a new store layout that includes a Wine & Beer shop. Coming from the creators of the smash hit Wine Cube back in the early 2000s, we’re looking forward to seeing what’s in store for the future Target wine. Find out more via their press release.
