Jamie and Bobby Deen launch Savannah Cellars Wines

It’s been a momentous year for celebrity-curated wine clubs. First, Martha Stewart expanded her home and lifestyle empire to include a monthly club of sommelier-sourced, Martha-approved wines. Now, southern cooking icon Paula Deen’s sons, Jamie and Bobby, are launching a monthly line of wines sourced from around the country and blended by a master vintner.

The Savannah Cellars selection currently includes 4 California wines in the $16 price point, which must be purchased in 3-, 6- or 12-bottle quantities. These include a Sangiovese, Primitivo, and Barbera Red Blend from Mendocino County, a Santa Barbara Rosé made from Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut, Counoise and Mourvèdre, and a 100% Chardonnay and 100% Merlot from Mendocino. The wines are currently available online only.

Of course, Paula Deen’s sons wouldn’t produce wines that didn’t pair well with food. Customers will also have access to Deen family recipes to pair with their wines. Not surprisingly, there is also an accompanying line of cookware and accessories available via retailer Evine.

How are the wines being received? The jury is still out, but Doug Margerum’s parternship is a promising sign that Savannah Cellars won’t be mediocre wines backed by a celebrity. Margerum founded the Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning restaurant Wine Cask, and his Margerum Über Syrah regularly rates 90 points across multiple wine critics, including Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.
