Favorite Wines for International Sauvignon Blanc Day

It’s about time Cinco de Mayo had some competition. After a long-held domination of May 5th, there’s another attraction on our social feeds: National Sauvignon Blanc Day.

In honor of this occasion, here are our favorite Sauvignon Blancs from across the world, that you can enjoy without breaking the bank:

Domaine Daulny – 2014 and 2015 were tremendous years in the Loire. Domaine Daulny is known in wine circles for its remarkable richness relative to other Sancerre, while still retaining a balance of acidity and minerality characteristic of Sancerre. In particular, 2014 and 2015 will have a depth of fruit that is surprising given the more typically lean, mineral-driven style found in Sancerre.

Laurent Reverdy – There aren’t too many wines I would snap up again in a second — this is one of them. For the value, the Laurent Reverdy Sancerre is is surprisingly delicious. Chalky, lemony minerality hits the nose first, followed by golden apple and hints of pear. On the palate, refreshing minerality with nice crisp acidity make this a beautiful partner to seafood and appetizers. This is a benchmark Sancerre.

Banshee Sauvignon Blanc – If you’re looking for a more widely available California Sauvignon Blanc, Banshee makes a lovely example. The Banshee Sonoma Coast Sauvignon Blanc is characterized by a delicate tropical fruit aromas, coupled with refreshing crispness on the palate. With slightly less acidity than Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, this Californian white is lovely standalone as an outdoor sipper, or with food.

Lake Chalice – This is of the few remaining privately and locally owned wine companies in Marlborough, New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blanc capital. Lake Chalice is notable for not being your typical, overtly tropical/grassy Sauvignon Blanc. Rather, it is incredibly light with a pale straw color, while managing to achieve incredible flavor and crispness.

Domaine Cailbourdin Pouilly Fume ‘les Cris’ – A wonderfully refreshing, concentrated wine and a fantastic example of Pouilly Fume. Les ‘Cris’ is used to describe the limestone soil, and is truly expressed by the fresh lime, peach, and pineapple aromas underscored by a zesty minerality. $22.99

There does not appear to be an official organization behind National Sauvignon Blanc Day. To honor this day, just raise a glass!
