Revamp for Mouton Cadet

Harpers Wine & Spirit today announced that “after 15 years of deliberation and development, Mouton Cadet has unveiled a new look to mark an upgrading of quality and repositioning of Bordeaux’s most prominent volume brand.”

But this is no typical upgrade, where the same wine gets a new label or prettier bottle to help stimulate sales. The most popular affordable French wine on Vivino revealed today via Harpers that its 2015 release will have both a new label and an improved blend.

First and foremost: the blend. The regular tier will contain more Merlot (85%), and lower amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The reserve tiers will contain more Cotes de Bordeaux grapes. This will ensure a higher level of quality than Bordeaux AOC grapes, which can be sourced from any AOC vineyard in the Gironde.

Second, and more obviously: the label. Mouton Cadet will switch from a white label to a black label.

Interestingly, despite the new blend, early reviews on the 2015 and 2016 releases do not appear to have a higher average rating on Vivino. However, we can say definitely that both the 2015 and 2016 Bordeaux vintages were highly successful relative to prior years. So, is the revamp working? We’ll keep an eye out.
